I got the opportunity to illustrate and design the poster and festival brochuer for Trollywood Animation Festival 2024. The Trollywood Animation Festival is hosted by the Trollhättan Animation Association and is supported by the Region Västra Götaland, City of Trollhättan and University West. The Trollywood Animation Festival has been run annually since 2016, except for 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in Sweden. They invite people in the animation industry from all over the world to lecture about their work. Their goal is to include all types of techniques and we want to reach out to professionals in the industry, students and those interested in animation.

There is a saying that the city of Trollhättan is named after a stone sticking out of the water which is the head of a troll. I had that in mind when I made the sketch but wanted to tweak it to give it a more dynamic and mysterious feel, set in the dramatic nature that surrounds the city. The troll’s hand flies up out of the water with a force field around it that creates a circular movement putting the smiley faces in motion. In the foreground someone is peaking through the bushes around the scene, taking it all in. I added small elements that can be connected to animation. Like the birds flying in the background that are in the shape of “easings” commonly used in animation software.

Sketch & colors
The sketch below is the final version sent to the client before the outlining and coloring process started. The colors used are inspired by sunsets in similar settings. I added the blue color as a nice contrast to the orange and yellows. Which added to the mystique of the illustration.

Trollywood Animation Festival hired Jimmy to design this year's poster and festival program, and since it was the first time we worked with an outside illustrator, we were a little unsure ourselves about how extensive the job would be, but we are really super happy with the collaboration! Communication was always easy and you could trust that both parties understood each other. The process was very smooth and we quickly got clear sketches of how he was thinking, and jimmy was very responsive to our feedback. The end result was absolutely perfect, and we also got help with layout and such where his illustration would be. Jimmy is super fast, inspiring and nice to work with!
